Postpartum Hair Loss

Shedding after pregnancy is common — but it is worth checking that nothing else is going on.

Many women notice heavy hair shedding two to four months after delivery. This is a form of telogen effluvium caused by the hormonal changes after pregnancy. It is usually temporary, and most women see recovery over the following months.

  • Shedding that continues beyond about six to twelve months
  • Patchy hair loss or a scalp that is itchy, sore or scaly
  • Signs of thyroid problems, anaemia or exhaustion
  • A widening part that suggests pattern hair loss beginning

At RD Clinic, care begins with a detailed clinical history, trichoscopy and targeted investigations where needed.

  • A history of pregnancy, delivery, feeding, diet and any illness
  • Trichoscopy to separate postpartum shedding from other hair conditions
  • Iron, thyroid and other tests only when they are indicated

Care is chosen to suit you, including if you are breastfeeding. It may include nutritional correction, gentle hair-care advice, scalp support and, where appropriate, further treatment. Suitability and expected outcomes are determined after clinical assessment. Outcomes vary according to diagnosis and individual response.
