Thinning hair with irregular periods or acne? Treating the cause improves the results.

In some women, hormonal disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) contribute to scalp hair thinning, often along with acne, irregular periods or excess facial and body hair. Hair loss may be a sign to look at the whole picture.

At RD Clinic, care begins with a detailed clinical history, trichoscopy and targeted investigations where needed.

  • A detailed history of periods, weight change, acne and facial hair
  • Trichoscopy to confirm the pattern of thinning
  • Hormonal investigations when the history or examination suggests an underlying disorder — not for everyone

Treatment combines management of the underlying hormonal issue, with a gynaecologist or endocrinologist where needed, and hair-specific care. In selected women, prescription medicines that reduce the effect of androgens may be used under medical supervision; they must not be taken in pregnancy. Regenerative and light-based treatments may be added.

Hormonal hair loss is a long-term concern that needs steady care and follow-up. Treatment aims to reduce further loss and improve density. Suitability and expected outcomes are determined after clinical assessment. Outcomes vary according to diagnosis and individual response.
